(6:41) – What do people get wrong about pitching?
Ditch the generic press release.
(11:15) – How to create a story-based pitch:
- Make sure you understand your business goals
- Identify your audience
- Figure out what media they consume
- Budget 40 minutes
- Spend half or 90 percent of that time writing the subject line
- Write at least four or five versions
- Spend the remaining time crafting the pitch
(38:02) – How do you follow up?
Pitch your local news, magazines, and trade papers.
Local is often the easiest to break in to because their primary agenda is to highlight local heroes.
Use Boomerang to bring unanswered pitches back around and follow up.
- Pro Tip: Put the name of your journalist in the subject line of your follow up pitch.
(46:00) – What is a reasonable follow up time range and frequency?
If it’s breaking news, follow up immediately.
If it’s a more evergreen story or your pitching in advance, 3 to 4 business is there standard practice.
